Dear friend,
Lately, I’ve been spending my evenings in a place I never expected: inside a video game where I voluntarily clean other people’s messes. It’s called House Flipper, and I’m convinced it was created for people who love home improvement but also love sitting down.
When you open a new job, the door swings wide, and you’re greeted with a scene that makes you pause. Trash everywhere, stains that look like they need a full investigation, and furniture arranged like someone gave up halfway through moving day. And yet, there I am, rolling up my virtual sleeves like I’ve been hired as the neighborhood cleanup crew.
Then comes the demolition. In real life, I would never trust myself with a sledgehammer. But in the game, I’m knocking down walls like I’m trying to reclaim a security deposit from decades ago. The wall disappears in neat little chunks, and I feel a kind of power that only digital destruction can provide.
Painting is its own adventure. You paint one tiny square at a time, which means I spend ten minutes covering a single wall while wondering why the process feels so realistic. I’ve painted entire houses in colors I would never choose in real life. Lime green bathrooms, purple hallways—anything goes when it’s not my electricity bill.
And then there’s the broom. This broom can wipe away anything. I’m talking stains that look like they require a hazmat team: one swipe and the floor sparkles. If real life worked like that, I’d mop my entire house in thirty seconds and spend the rest of the day feeling proud of myself.
Eventually, it’s time to sell. After hours of cleaning, painting, tiling, and rearranging furniture like I’m trying to impress a very particular aunt, I put the house on the market. A group of buyers starts bidding, each with dramatic opinions. One dislikes kitchens. One refuses to buy anything without a bathtub. Another gets offended if a couch sits too close to a window. I’m convinced they’re all in a group chat discussing my choices.
Still, when that final offer comes in, I feel proud. I’ve taken a disaster and turned it into something beautiful, even if it’s just pixels.
House Flipper has become my little escape. It’s relaxing, it’s silly, and it lets me live out my renovation dreams without lifting anything heavier than my mouse. There’s something comforting about transforming a mess into a home, even a virtual one. Maybe that’s why I keep going back. Or maybe I really enjoy knocking down walls.
Either way, it’s been a fun little chapter in my world lately. And if you ever see me staring at a wall in my real house, just know I’m thinking about how easily I could knock it down in the game.
