New Orleans: Place d’Armes and the Heart of the French Quarter

We always stay at Place d’Armes Hotel on St. Ann Street, and it has become our home base in New Orleans. The courtyard, the balconies, the quiet charm, it’s the perfect spot tucked just steps from Jackson Square. The location is fantastic, and from the moment we drop our bags, we’re already in the middle of everything we love about the French Quarter.

One of our first stops is always Café Du Monde. We walked over for beignets and café au lait, found a table outside, and listened to the jazz musicians who play right along the sidewalk. There’s something about the mix of powdered sugar, brass instruments, and the morning breeze off the river that feels like pure New Orleans.

We spent the day exploring the city on foot, wandering through the Quarter and taking in the architecture, the balconies, and the street art tucked into corners and alleys. We visited the French Market and walked through the farmers' market stalls, checking out local crafts, spices, and all the little things that make the market feel alive.

We also did a graveyard tour, which was one of the most interesting parts of the trip. The history of the cemeteries, the above‑ground tombs, and the stories behind them gave us a deeper appreciation for the city’s culture and traditions.

For dinner, we went to Boil Seafood House, and it was incredible. The food was fresh, flavorful, and exactly what you want when you’re in New Orleans.

Later, we walked down Bourbon Street, the music pouring out of every doorway, the neon lights, the crowds, the energy. It’s one of those places you have to experience at least once every trip, even if it’s just to take it all in before heading somewhere quieter.

One of our favorite surprises was Clover Grill, a great little 24/7 diner‑style grill. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was fun, and the servers were so friendly. It felt like one of those classic New Orleans spots where everyone is welcome, and the coffee never stops pouring.

New Orleans is one of those cities that feels familiar every time we return, yet there’s always something new to discover. Staying on St. Ann Street, walking the Quarter, listening to jazz, exploring the markets, and finding new places to eat never gets old.
