I went into our ABC Islands cruise expecting sunshine, beaches, and easy days with my mom. We found all of that, but what surprised me most was how different each island felt and how much there was to learn from the people who live there.

What started as a simple vacation turned into a trip filled with discovery, culture, and moments I’ll always remember. Looking back, the real highlight wasn’t just the islands themselves; it was experiencing them together.

Aruba: A Desert in the Caribbean?

Aruba, known proudly as One Happy Island, was our first stop. A bus tour around the island quickly challenged the picture I had in my mind. Instead of lush tropical scenery, much of Aruba looked like a desert, with giant cacti rising out of the dry landscape and bright blue water surrounding the rugged coastline.

We learned about Aruba’s famous wind‑shaped trees, which naturally grow leaning toward the south because of the island’s constant trade winds. Seeing one in person made the story even more memorable.

Daily life on the island was just as fascinating. Children grow up speaking Papiamento and learn Spanish, Dutch, and English in school, moving easily between languages. And despite being surrounded by saltwater, Aruba produces its drinking water through desalination, creating some of the purest tap water in the world.

What surprised me most: Aruba showed me that not every Caribbean island fits the image we expect. The desert landscape, towering cacti, south‑leaning trees, multilingual culture, and world‑class drinking water made One Happy Island full of unexpected discoveries.

Bonaire: More Than Just Beautiful Beaches

Bonaire was our next stop, and our bus tour gave us a wonderful look at the island’s culture, nature, and everyday life. Like Aruba, many residents speak Papiamento, along with Dutch and English, which adds to the island’s warm and welcoming character.

One of the most fascinating parts of the day was visiting Bonaire’s salt flats. I had never realized how salt is made. The shallow seawater pools turn a beautiful pink as they evaporate, and seeing those colorful ponds in person was unforgettable. Nearby, the enormous white salt mountains were just as striking.

Bonaire’s natural beauty continued at Goto Lake, where we saw flamingos feeding in the water. It was such a peaceful moment and one of my favorite memories from the island. We also stopped at the well‑known dive site 1000 Steps, where the clear turquoise water and rocky shoreline created an incredible view.

Throughout the day, we spotted parakeets in the wild, adding bright pops of color to the landscape. And we learned the touching history behind Bonaire’s free‑roaming donkeys, which were released after enslaved people were freed. Today, they wander the island as part of its living history.

What surprised me most: I never expected to learn how salt is made, see flamingos at Goto Lake, visit 1000 Steps, or hear the meaningful story behind Bonaire’s donkeys. The island was full of unexpected discoveries.

Curaçao: Discovering the Island on Foot

Curaçao was our final stop, and instead of joining a bus tour, my mom and I decided to explore on our own. We created a simple walking route before the trip, which let us wander at our own pace and stop whenever something caught our attention.

We started along the waterfront, taking in the colorful buildings and lively atmosphere. As we walked, we browsed local shops and enjoyed seeing a more personal side of the island. One of our favorite stops was the historic fort, where the old stone walls and cannons offered a glimpse into Curaçao’s long history.

No visit would be complete without crossing the Queen Emma Bridge, the famous Swinging Old Lady. Walking across it and looking out over the water was one of the highlights of our day, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the island’s most recognizable landmarks.

The mix of bright architecture, friendly locals, and a walkable waterfront made Curaçao feel different from the other islands in the best way.

What surprised me most: Curaçao reminded me that some of the best travel moments happen when you slow down, explore on foot, and let the day unfold naturally.

Reflections on the ABC Islands

Each island surprised me differently. Aruba challenged my assumptions about what a Caribbean island looks like. Bonaire introduced me to industries, wildlife, and history I never expected to encounter. Curaçao reminded me that some of the best travel experiences happen when you slow down and explore at your own pace.

Most importantly, this journey gave me the opportunity to create wonderful memories with my mom. While the photographs will help preserve the moments we shared, it is the conversations, discoveries, and experiences that I will remember most.
