Thereās something special about packing up the car, grabbing a few snacks, and heading out on a road trip with people you love. This one took me, my mom, my brother, and my sisterāinālaw from the quiet hills of Tennessee to the charm of Helen, the breezes of St. Simons Island, and the warm coastline of Ormond Beach, with a few unexpected stops along the way. It was the kind of trip that reminds you how good it feels to slow down, explore, and let the days unfold naturally.
Helen, Georgia ~ A Cozy First Stop
We started our journey in Helen, Georgia, a small Bavarianāinspired town tucked into the mountains. Itās one of those places that feels like a storybook, with colorful buildings, cobblestone touches, and the kind of charm that makes you want to wander slowly.
We stayed the night, explored the town, and enjoyed an authentic German meal that was exactly what we needed after a day on the road. I shared the full review and photos in my HofbrƤuhaus House Food Review if you want to see what we ordered.
St. Simons Island ~ A Breezy MidāTrip Pause
On our way south, we made a stop at St. Simons Island, and Iām so glad we did. The island has a relaxed, coastal feel that hits you the moment you step out of the car. Soft breezes, wide beaches, and a sense of calm that settles in quickly.
We also stopped for lunch at Barbara Jeanās, and I shared the full details in my Barbara Jeanās Food Review.
Ormond Beach ~ Our Home Base
Once we arrived in Ormond Beach, everything slowed down in the best way. This became our home base for the rest of the trip, long beach walks, salty air, and the kind of sunshine that makes you breathe a little deeper.
One of our favorite meals here was at Margarita Island, and I shared the photos and details in my Margarita Island Food Review.
Daytona Beach ~ Boardwalk & Shoreline Energy
In Daytona Beach, we walked the boardwalk and spent time along the shoreline, taking in the energy of the area. Itās lively, colorful, and full of movement, the kind of place where thereās always something happening.
Flagler Beach ~ A Quiet, Peaceful Stretch
Flagler Beach had a completely different feel. It was quieter, more relaxed, and perfect for a peaceful walk along the sand. The waves were gentle, the breeze was soft, and it felt like a little pocket of calm tucked along the coast.
Ponce Inlet ~ Lighthouse & Park Views
Ponce Inlet was one of the most memorable stops. We visited the lighthouse and explored the surrounding park, both of which offered beautiful views and a sense of history. Itās the kind of place where you naturally slow down, taking in the scenery and the sound of the water.
New Smyrna Beach ~ Warm, Welcoming, Easygoing
New Smyrna Beach was warm, welcoming, and easygoing. We walked the beach and wandered along Flagler Avenue, which has such a charming coastalātown vibe. Itās the kind of spot that makes you want to linger a little longer, and I shared the full meal and photos in my Cafe Verde Food Review.
Cassadaga ~ A Curious, Quirky Detour
We wandered the streets, explored the shops, and I picked up a couple of pieces of jewelry that I absolutely love. It was such a fun contrast to the beach, quiet, quirky, and full of little surprises.
Ocala, Orlando, Ormond Beach, and New Smyrna Beach ~ Foodie Moments
We enjoyed some wonderful meals throughout the trip, each one adding its own flavor to the week. We had a great meal in Ocala, and I shared the full details in my Codyās Original Roadhouse Food Review. Later, we took a detour to Orlando for Gordon Ramsayās Fish & Chips, because⦠how could we not?
We also found some delicious bites in Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach. Each stop had its own standout dishes, and all of these meals will be in the Food Reviews section if you want to see the photos and details.
Closing Thoughts
This trip was a blend of everything I love: family, sunshine, wandering, good food, and the freedom to explore at our own pace. From the mountains of Georgia to the beaches of Florida, every stop added something meaningful to the week.
Sometimes the best trips arenāt the ones packed with plans, theyāre the ones that unfold naturally, one beautiful moment at a time.
